Shibe Park
Shibe Park was tightly bordered by north Philadelphia homes. It was the first full concrete & steel stadium in MLB. Initially, row house residents viewed games from rooftops beyond right field. Later, a high corrugated metal fence was installed to prevent viewing. Exterior had regal architecture. The Athletics opened the venue in 1909. The Phillies became permanent tenants in 1938. Just prior to the Athletics departure for KC, the ballpark’s name changed to Connie Mack Stadium in 1953.
