San Diego Stadium
Opened in San Diego’s Mission Valley during 1967, it was multi-purposed for pro football & baseball. In 1969, it became a venue for MLB with the Padres. Built in the “brutalist” style, it was a familiar site for freeway travelers who saw the skeletal, concrete exterior. With combined square/round seating bowl, it was considered modern & roomy at grand opening. Spectators had views to hillsides beyond the outfield, until upper deck outfield seat expansion enclosed the venue in 1997.
